Earth Day!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22. In order to educate students at P.S. 269 about the importance of preserving our planet, our students will be participating in an Earth Day activity. On Earth Day our students will learn about the importance of recycling and the various items made from recycled trash. After, students will head into our playground and park to collect recyclable items such as paper, wrappers, and plastic bottles. The students will then reuse the materials collected to create a recycled art project with our art teacher.

In order for your child to participate they must have their neighborhood walking slip signed and returned. If you have not already done so, please ask your child’s teacher for a neighborhood walking slip to complete.

Please continue to recycle, reduce, and reuse with your child at home. Some activities you can try with your child to reduce your environmental footprint are:

  • Recycle at least on plastic item, one paper item, and one metal item.
  • Be a power saver! Turn off the lights, TV, or other plugged-in item when you leave a room.
  • Be a water saver! Turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth. Take a shower instead of a bath to save water.
  • Reuse! Use a reusable bottle instead of plastic water bottles.
  • Don’t be a litterbug! Pick up trash (at least 10 items) around your school and neighborhood.
  • Reuse! Use cloth/reusable bags instead of plastic grocery bags at the store.
  • Reduce! Use both sides of the paper before you recycle it.
  • Reduce! Use cloth towels instead of paper towels.

We look forward to celebrating Earth Day with our students and can’t wait to see their recycled works of art. Thank you for your continued support.

We raised 60 coats for people in need!
Thank you to all who participated in the Student Council Coat Drive!

Dear Parents,

Imagine not having a coat for you or your loved ones during the freezing winters in New York? This month the students at P.S. 269 have chosen to host a coat drive, which will be organized by the Student Council. We are partnering with New York Cares and reaching out to our parents to donate gently used or new coats.

Last year New York Cares collected and distributed 78,000 coats to people in need. However, they typically have requests for 100,000 coats.  We hope to help them come closer to reaching their goal and provide coats for fellow New Yorkers in need.

Please donate new or gently used coats so that we can continue to help our neighbors stay warm during the fall and winter months. The last day to donate coats is December 19th. Please send in the coats in a plastic bag that is labeled with your child’s name. All coats must be washed or dry-cleaned if they are used. Following the completion of the coat drive, the coats will be given to the police precinct, an authorized New York Cares collection site.

We thank you in advance for your support and generosity.

Unity Day!

Unite Against Bullying!

What are your true colors when it comes to bullying? If you care about safe and supportive schools and communities make your color ORANGE on Unity Day. That’s the day everyone can come together—in schools, communities, and online—and send one large ORANGE message of support, hope, and unity.

October is National Bully Prevention Month and on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, P.S. 269 has joined the movement and will be Raising Awareness and Standing United against Bullying through a Neighborhood Walk at 9:30 AM. All staff and students will unite against bullying by wearing orange.

Whose Child is This?

Author Unknown

"Whose child is this?" I asked one day
Seeing a little one out at play
"Mine", said the parent with a tender smile
"Mine to keep a little while
To bathe his hands and comb his hair
To tell him what he is to wear
To prepare him that he may always be good
And each day do the things he should"

"Whose child is this?" I asked again
As the door opened and someone came in
"Mine", said the teacher with the same tender smile
"Mine, to keep just for a little while
To teach him how to be gentle and kind
To train and direct his dear little mind
To help him live by every rule
And get the best he can from school"

"Whose child is this?" I ask once more
Just as the little one entered the door
"Ours" said the parent and the teacher as they smiled
And each took the hand of the little child
"Ours to love and train together
Ours this blessed task forever."
